The Idiot Index. How badly are you being overcharged?

Elon Musk coined the idiot index at SpaceX: a part's price divided by the cost of its raw materials. A high score means someone, somewhere, thinks you're an idiot. We estimate it for 1,000+ everyday products — some score 2×. Some score 100×. Look up yours.

“If the ratio is high, the idiot index is high” — a component costing $1,000 whose materials cost $100 has an idiot index of 10. Musk used it to attack absurd aerospace pricing; we apply it to everything else.

// the method

How the index works.

01

Products enter the index

A daily discovery agent and community research submissions feed the registry — every product tracked with full provenance and submitter attribution.

02

BOMs are estimated & dated

Each product gets a conservative bill-of-materials estimate, snapshotted with a date stamp so price and BOM changes are tracked over time.

03

You interrogate the markup

Explore the navigator, vote on estimates, play the challenges, embed the data, or run a vendor audit. Every figure is an estimate — and says so.
